Professional Ceramic Coatings for Cars

Ceramic coatings bond to your vehicle's paint, glass, wheels, and interior surfaces to create a durable, hydrophobic barrier against UV, road grime, mineral deposits, and everyday contaminants. D-TAIL LAB's coating lineup includes professional-grade SiO2 formulas for paint, wheels, glass, leather, and marine applications — all tested in Canadian conditions.

DIY vs. Professional Ceramic Coatings

Not all ceramic coatings require the same skill level. Some products in this collection are designed for experienced installers who understand surface preparation, application technique, and cure management. Others are more approachable for skilled DIY enthusiasts. CERAMI-X INVICTA is an advanced coating that proper paint correction and surface prep are essential before application. For professional installers, CERAMI-X KRYPTO is an Installer Only high-solid formula — it is intended for authorized, certified professional installers and must not be treated as a beginner or DIY coating.

Durability

Durability varies by product and application. Based on manufacturer specifications:

Actual longevity depends on maintenance, climate exposure, and proper application. No coating lasts forever — regular care extends performance.

Paint Preparation

A ceramic coating locks in whatever's underneath it — including swirl marks, oxidation, and contamination. Proper preparation is non-negotiable:

  1. Decontaminate: Remove embedded iron and fallout with ThePURGE, then pre-wash to lift traffic film.
  2. Paint correction: Address swirl marks and oxidation using products from our paint correction and compounds, polishes & pads collections.
  3. Polishing tools: Use appropriate polishers and backing plates for your correction work.
  4. Final wipe-down: Remove all oils and residue before coating application. REVEAL Pre-Coat Surface Prep is recommended for removing polishing oils and preparing the surface for ceramic coating bonding.

Coating Hardness Claims — Explained Carefully

Hardness ratings like "7H" and "9H" refer to the pencil hardness test — a standardized method for evaluating coating scratch resistance. A higher number indicates greater resistance to marring from light contact. However, hardness ratings are measured on the cured coating film under controlled conditions. They do not mean the coating makes your paint immune to scratches, rock chips, or impact damage. A 9H-rated coating is more resistant to micro-marring than a 7H-rated coating, but neither replaces paint protection film (PPF) for impact resistance.

Hydrophobic Performance

All ceramic coatings in this collection produce a hydrophobic (water-repelling) surface. This means water beads and sheets away, carrying loose dirt with it and reducing how often you need to wash. The degree of beading and sheeting varies by product and surface type. CERAMI-X SPECTA is formulated specifically for glass to improve wet-weather visibility, while INVICTA delivers hydrophobic protection optimized for paint.

Cure Time

Cure time is the period the coating needs to fully harden and bond after application. Based on product instructions:

  • CERAMI-X KRYPTO: Flash time 60–120 seconds. Allow a 12+ hour cure before exposure or vehicle delivery.
  • CERAMI-X INVICTA: Optional second coat after 30 minutes. Cure before exposure.
  • CERAMI-X FORZA (wheels): Cure before driving or exposure. Optional second coat after 30 minutes.

Plan your application around dry weather and a garage or covered space. Humidity and temperature affect cure time.

Maintenance

A coated car still needs washing — but less frequently and with less effort. Use a maintenance shampoo that's coating-safe (no harsh degreasers or wax strippers). Vice Wash Coat Shampoo and Origin Detailing Shampoo are formulated to clean without degrading ceramic layers. Use quality microfiber towels to avoid marring the coating during drying.

Choosing a Coating

Canadian Climate Considerations

Canadian winters mean road salt, extreme temperature swings, and months of grime buildup. A ceramic coating helps protect paint from salt-induced corrosion and makes spring decontamination easier. However, winter washing requires care — avoid applying coatings below the manufacturer's minimum temperature, and never apply outdoors in freezing conditions. During winter, a coated vehicle can be rinsed more effectively with less contact washing, which reduces the risk of scratching when the car is covered in road salt. For heavy decontamination, products from our contamination removal collection are the right starting point.
