That browning effect on your tires is actually completely normal. In the automotive world, this phenomenon is called blooming.

Here is why your tires go from a deep black to an earthy brown:

1. The Culprit: Antiozonant

Tire rubber is constantly exposed to oxygen, UV rays, and—most importantly—ozone in the air. Without protection, ozone would dry out the rubber, causing it to crack and degrade prematurely, a process known as dry rotting.

To prevent this, manufacturers mix a chemical compound called antiozonant into the rubber compound.

2. How "Blooming" Works

Antiozonant is designed to continuously migrate from the tire interior to the outer surface.

  • Once it reaches the surface, it comes into contact with oxygen and ozone.
  • It purposely oxidizes to protect the underlying rubber.
  • This chemical reaction, the oxidized antiozonant, is what creates that brown or tea-colored film.

In short: If your tires are turning brown, it’s a sign that they are doing their job and actively protecting themselves against aging.

Other Contributing Factors

  • Lack of driving: The centrifugal force generated by a spinning tire helps distribute the antiozonant evenly. A car that sits idle for long periods will accumulate this brown residue much more visibly.
  • Brake dust and road grime: Hot brake dust and road dirt stick to this protective film, making the brown tint look even worse.
  • Poor-quality tire dressings: Some cheap, silicone-based tire shines trap the antiozonant beneath the surface and actually accelerate the browning process.

How to Get Rid of It

If you find it unsightly, you can easily clean your tires:

  1. Use a dedicated tire and wheel cleaner or a mild degreaser.
  2. Scrub the sidewalls vigorously with a stiff-bristled brush. You will see a thick, brown sudsy residue come off.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  4. Optional: Apply a quality tire dressing, preferably water-based, to restore that deep black look without interfering with the tire's natural protection process.
